What's Archetype Portrait Photography? How This Transformative Experience Helps You See Yourself Differently

Updated: 6 days ago

The Invitation

Have you ever looked at a photograph of yourself and thought, “That’s who I am becoming, my future self embodied in the now”? That’s the power of an Archetype Portrait — it’s not about posing or perfection. It’s about becoming.

In my clients' homes in the Asheville area and the wild landscapes beyond them, I help women step into their deeper story — the one written in their bones, their laughter, their gaze. Through guided somatic coaching, intuitive imagery, and nature-based photography, we uncover the archetype that’s ready to emerge: the Warrioress, the Muse, the Healer, the Lover, the Queen.

So… What Is Archetype portrait photography?

At its core, an archetype portrait is a portal for transformation. Instead of capturing a single moment, it captures a threshold.

Every woman has access to the many archetypes of humanity within her — ancient patterns that show up in how she leads, loves, creates, and heals. During an Archetype Portrait Session, we identify the energy that wants to come forward right now. Sometimes she arrives as a whisper. Sometimes she storms in like wildfire.

Example: “When Jamie came to me, she was navigating a major life change. Through our session, she connected with her ‘Priestess’ archetype — the part of her ready to bring together the boldness of her past self, the nurturing element of her most recent familial self, and the wisdom of her future self integrating all these parts of her into a legacy to share with her daughters. The portraits became a visual affirmation of that intricate process.”

The Process — How It Works

Each Archetype Portrait Journey unfolds through three phases:

1. The Archetype Visioning Session: We begin with conversation. This is where you share what’s shifting, what you’re reclaiming, and what part of you wants to be seen. Sometimes we use tarot or guided hypnosis to help the archetype reveal herself.

2. The Embodiment & Portrait Session: This is where the magic meets the mundane. We choose wardrobe and location to reflect the energy of your archetype — forest, waterfall, candlelit studio, golden field.

We choose a location that helps you feel most relaxed, comfortable, and safe to drop into your inner world. For some women, that's their living room, for others, its a secret spot in nature they found on a family hike. The session is relaxed, intuitive, and deeply collaborative. My job is to help you forget the camera and feel the energy move through you.

3. The Reveal: A week or so later, you’ll see your portraits — and meet yourself in a new way. Many women describe tears, laughter, or an overwhelming sense of recognition.

Why It Matters

We live in a culture that teaches women to shrink, smile, and self-edit.

An Archetype Portrait offers the opposite: acceptance & expansion.

It’s not about how you look — it’s about what you’re remembering. When you witness yourself in this way, the photograph becomes more than art; it becomes a talisman of your becoming.

These portraits often mark turning points:  a milestone birthday, a divorce, a new career, the end of a long caregiving season, or simply a quiet knowing that something within is ready to bloom.

Common Questions

“Do I need to know my archetype before I book?” Not at all. Some women come knowing the archetype they're working with, others with just a feeling they know they want more of in their lives. Discovering it is part of the process. Together, we’ll uncover the symbols, emotions, and imagery that feel most alive for you. Interestingly, sometimes the Archetype doesn't even drop her name into the process until after the Photo Reveal!

“What should I wear?” Clothing is chosen to evoke your archetype, not to impress. Flowing fabrics, textures, or simple lines that let energy move are ideal. You’ll receive a full prep guide before your session.

“Where do sessions take place?” Most sessions unfold in a client's home or in a natural setting around Asheville, NC — from moss-covered forests to mountaintop vistas, to creeks and waterfalls.

“Is this the same as boudoir photography?” No — though some portraits include sensuality. The focus isn’t on seduction; it’s on self-reclamation. You set the tone, wardrobe, and creative focus.

The Deeper Layer

My Archetype photography process bridges personal growth, art, and spirituality. Each session invites you to dialogue with your subconscious through imagery — a practice inspired by Jungian archetypes, myth, and the language of dreams.

"Every woman deserves to feel powerful, sensual, and at home in her own skin. My work creates the safety to explore every facet of who you are, in a way authentic to you and your belief system, so you can be seen, celebrated, and remembered for who you truly feel yourself to be on the inside."

When you see yourself through this lens, something shifts. You start showing up differently — in your relationships, your work, your daily rituals. The photograph becomes a reminder: You are whole, already.

Conclusion + Invitation

Every woman deserves a portrait of her becoming.

If you’re feeling the pull to see yourself differently — to uncover the part of you that wants to be witnessed — this is your invitation.
